hi i want to buy a shotgun mic

i have a relatively high budget of 7k.

which mic should i get"?

what mic did they use on the set of the matrix? or BMW films?

a film.shotgun mic thats put on a boom.

For that kind of money you could get:
a Sennheiser MKH-50 and MKH-60 and MKH-70.
a shockmount/zeppelin system
a carbon-fiber boom pole
a second boom pole
a second shockmount
good headphones
good cables
and still have enough to buy an excellent pro mixer for your 3 new mics...

or you could delete the MKH-70 and get a Lectrosonics wireless.

or you could get an AT4073a and some of the above accessories and put the remaining $4k towards something else.

For about $4.5K of that you can get a nice Schoeps MK41/M8 "kit" with the
Schoeps preamp, special Y cable, suspension mic clip and the blimp. I think
posthorn.com is one US Schoeps dealer.

Neumann also makes a couple of nice shotguns.

Prices on German mics are about to go UP!!!

I would guess the schoeps mk41 is the most used on high end projects. I thought you could get into one for cheaper than $4.5k though. Why do you think prices will be going up?

Budget aside, what type of projects do you plan to use this mic for? What types of applications?

Just a thought Arthur, for $7K you could hire an experienced sound person who already owns all their own mics and other equipment. Since this is for a film festival with a fixed deadline, then you know what your shooting schedule will be like, and you could book a sound person accordingly. Not only will they have an arsenal of gear, but a wealth of experience and skill, which is why hiring a person like that can be so beneficial.

You can buy one MK41 capsule and an adapter for less than $4.5K, BUT
I was (have priced) pricing an entire kit.

The Schoeps dream KIT:

Two capsules, the MK41 is the hyper cardioid and the MK8 is the figure 8 capsule that sits under the 41 and looks out to the sides. The amount of MK8
in the mix is the amount of ambience you can adjust. There
is also the Schoeps battery powered mic preamplifier which when
used in conjunction with their "special Y" cable enables you to
plug the mics in without buying two additional adapters
(ala the Sennheiser K6). Then there's the suspension clip for
both caps, the softball sized blimp and wind screen. Those last items
probably go for over a grand by themselves.

I can't remember if this price also included a fish pole.

Oh, and we've been talking to the Neumann/Sennheiser guru Michael Pappas.
The dollar has never been weaker against the Euro than right now
and prices are also going up Jan 1, so what this means is that
a mic like the Sennheiser MKH800 (List $3K) is going up $500!!!
