Mic for MiniDisc field recordings
 

Hi there

I've just bought a secondhand Sony MZ-R90 minidisc recorder for doing field recording and then syncing to video in the editor.
I have a very tight budget and was wondering on what sort of mic I could buy for voice recordings on a boom pole and for ambience recording? Which one would be good for both?

I use an Audio Technica AT822 stereo mic plugged directly into a Sony MD. Works well for ambient sound. Have recorded some concerts as well with excellent results.Get a good wind cover if using outdoors.

I´ve used the 825, the XLR version. It´s indeed a fine stereo mic. Another mic that´s not quite as good (IMHO), but less expensive and smaller, is the Sony ECM-MS907. There´s a camera shoe version of it, too.

There's the MS907 and 908. One of them is the camcorder mount version. The sound quality from that mic would be good enough for me.

The MS907/908 would be good for ambient recordings, but I'm not so sure about boom work. You might want to go for a hypercardioid mic like the Oktava MC012 or a shotgun mic (more expensive) but those XLR mics have other costs. All the accessories for the Oktava can cost more than the mic. For example, Guitar Center has/had a $50 special on that mic with the cardioid capsule, but if you want the hypercardioid cap then it's like $64 from soundroom.com. Then you need to give the mic phantom power and probably pre-amp it.
