mic description question

"...high quality, high sensitivity, wide range unidirectional condenser microphone."

What exactly does "wide range" mean here? Does it mean good highs and lows? Thanks.

Jay Massengill February 19th, 2004 07:55 AM

That's what I would take it to mean, that the mic has a wide frequency range. Of course if they don't quantify that with both the actual numbers and the deviation from flat response that the mic may have at both ends and sometimes in the middle, then it's meaningless.

They could also be potentially referring to it's uses. Still a weak market statement but nonetheless...

Thanks. The frequency response is 70-17000 Hz, S/N ratio is 60dB, sensitivity is -65 dB, imedence is 250 Ohms.

Not really that wide then, given that it's sure to have rolloff at both top and bottom are sure to have slopes too, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It might have bumps in the range as well. I'd be surprised if it didn't.
Which mic is it? Used for what?

Frank Granovski February 19th, 2004 01:39 PM

It's that Apex 191 for $99 Canadian---which I'm going to buy as soon as I get that shock-mount. I'm be using it on a couple of small hand-helds (no XLRs). I'm just looking to improve the audio a bit, and mainly to make it so that the cam engine noise isn't picked up.
