Inexpensive DAT replacement?

The information they post suggests this is nice. Douglass? |
Whoa... very cool, but a bit overwhelming to fully take in, if one isn't already an audio wiz. How would a setup like this compare with using the Marantz PMD (as the post says, as a field DAT replacement) in terms of: a) ease of use; b) reliability (I've had compact flash cards fail); and c) the audio quality?

i actually have the mic2496, only i use it with an iRiver IHP-120. advantage of the iriver over ipod is... it has an optical input. the mic2496 has an optical output.
ihp-120 records 16 bit 48khz or 44.1 khz. the sound is very very clean and stays sync with video |
This is a newly developing recording platform. Currently, Core-Sound's hardware has only digital inputs. I know of one company (PocketRec.com) working on a software /hardware solution (part of which is from Core-Sound) that will take both stereo analog and digital inputs. The software will feature a full set of recording and editing tools. However, I would not consider it to be "inexpensive".
It will be available from ATSComms.com |
Core-Sound appears to have analog input available.
$1,000 compared to a good dat is inexpensive I think. |
Corrected. With the Mic2496, it does have analog mic level inputs. I beleive that PocketRec is developing another A/D device as well with mic pre's and /or line level inputs.
According to Core's estimates, the hardware (assuming you find the PDA for only $150.00 - New would be closer to $500.00) will range from $800.00 to $1200.00. The various software packages range from under $50.00 to around $700.00 Not "inexpensive", yet no more expensive than a standard professinal MD, HDD, or CF recorder. Professional DAT recorders are now history. |

1K compared to a good DAT is quite expensive. Core has some really cool stuff happening, i looked at it at CES, but it wasn't fully ready for launch then. PD Audio CF looks awesome. Then again, HiMD is looking pretty promising too.

But Douglass. Most DATs won't handle GPS, games, and email! |
