Getting decent sound into a HDR-FX1
 

Tomorrow I plan to place an order for the new Sony HDR-FX1. The package does not include a microphone other than the built in stereo mic nor does it come with XLR inputs. I could easily put together a shopping list of accessories including high end audio that would equal the price of the camera but I don’t have a money tree yet so that won’t happen. I have been shooting with a Sony PDX10 which came with a Sony ECM-NV1 mic and XLR inputs. I can purchase a Beachtec type XLR and continue with the ECM-NV1 or I can purchase a AT987 which I understand has a battery that provides phantom power and plug this into an XLR to mini-plug adaptor and plug that into the camera and in due course, when I have the money, get a Beachtec. Or is there yet a better approach that won’t cost an arm and a leg. Suggestions appreciated.

I'd recommend option B or C.
The 897 with the adapter is great.
The Beachtek with phantom and XLR is even better.

I would assume that the combination I use for my VX-2100 would suite. I use a DXA-8 and also have two AT8202 Attenuators. I need the 8202s because my AT835ST can be too hot for the Beachtek. Your mileage may vary.

Edit - I only run the attenuators in the rig when working with loud marching bands. That is when I overdrive the DXA-8 without them.

I also think the AT897, with the appropriate mono to stereo adapter cable, is your best bet. If this new Sony camera's mic input has "Plug-In Power" you'll need an adapter cable with a blocking capacitor.
If you go the BeachTek route, either the DXA-6 or the DXA-8 are good. The AT897 shouldn't overdrive the BeachTek, it doesn't have near as high an output as the AT835ST. However, with the DXA-8, you probably will need to use the Mic ATT input setting on the camera. Most Sony camera's have that, but I don't know for sure about this new model.
