Good minidisk Lav
 

I need a lavalier microphone that works well with a minidisk recorder for a wedding next weekend. I was thinking about the ecm-145 that Mike mentioned in one of his posts on this topic, but I'm a little concerned about the flexibility of the mic due to its fairly low overload spec. I also notice that B&H no longer carries these, and they appear to be out of production. I am tempted to buy the ecm-44b for some extra overload protection, but they are a lot more expensive and they don't appear to come with a connector style that works well with a minidisk recorder. The 1/8" plug version is not right angle and it comes with a threaded nut. I have found this type of connectory to not want to seat all the way on my minidisk player because it doesn't have the matching threads. Any suggestions on how to handle this if I want an ecm-44b? Is this enough of an upgrade to the ecm-145 that I should consider it? Any other lavs I should consider?

When using a minidisk player with a lav, do you tape the 1/8" connector to the minidisk player to prevent it from coming out or generating static?

The 145 is not a great, maybe not even a good, lav. But it works for voice OK.

The 44b is much better but it does require phantom power. How much, I don't know. The MD recorders only supply 3 VDC for microphones like the 145.

The 1/8" plug for the 44b is for a wireless that can supply phantom power to the microphone.

You will have to figure out the connections on the MD, the connections on the 44b and decide if the MD can supply adequate power to the microphone.
