Putting on a Rycote Softie
 

Warning: I'm very new to DV so bear with this question.

I just got a Rycote 18cm Medium Hole Softie for my Sennheisser ME66 shotgun mic. I've noticed it was a bit laborious putting the softie on, having to twist and thrust fairly hard.

For fear of damaging either item, I have this silly question: Is there a proper technique to put the softie on (and taking it off) the mic? Or is it just a case of the softie needing to be broken in?

i have the me66 and the rycote windscreen, is yours the furry model??

i have the furry one and it was a little bit of work but not unbearable.

just make sure you have the right model for your mic

Yes, I'm pretty sure I've got the right size after looking it up on rycote.com.

And yes, the softie is the furry one.

The Rycote stuff is kind of like that... I was tempted to start a thread about this very topic 'cause if anybody gets a 4073a and gets the Softie MOUNT that Rycote SAYS to get... it will be LOOSE! I've verified this with TWO different Rycote mounts! You should get the next size down from what Rycote SAYS is for the 4073a... am I clear on that?

Hey as for the actual Softie (furry) yeah there's a little work in getting the Softie on, but better to be tight then loose... ahem.

I've got an AKG ck69 and putting a Softie on THAT is a chore... it's like 19" long or so!

Rycote also says that their 19-20mm Baby Ball Gag WON'T fit on the Oktava mics that a lot of us seem to like... You know what? Rycote is WRONG... Myself, Beas, and many others are loving the BBG for the Oktava.

Summary? Since these specialty audio companies are making relatively small production runs of products you can't hold them to the same scrutiny that you could with say, Craftsman. Not everything always fits like you would expect it to... and sometimes things work that weren't supposed to work (size)... but in the end, at least you always know you'll get good results with their gear.

Tight is right... it's all good.
