My AT897 works fine on PP without the battery in. In fact, I am worried about having both at same time (see my thread).

In the case of the Rode NT3 which has a 9v battery, if you plug it into a phantom powered xlr you still have to turn the mic on for it to work so you have no choice. I would imagine if you mic works with the switch in the off position using phantom power then why not just use it that way, and save the battery (although with PP I don't think the battery gets drained at all even if it is in the circuit)
