I have since purchased thef Audio Technica BPHS--1 Headset. The mike is very close to your mouth (2 inches) and as such it cuts out most of the ambient noise.

They do make 3rd party fans for computers that are MUCH quieter than the stock fans.

I have tried most, but not all. My system has 8 fans - including CPU, Power supply and a 120mm side fan. Doesn't quite sound like a helicopter but very nearly.

CPU and quality PSU aren't noisy its the case fan because its usually spinning faster than necessary. After market case fans have different methods to solve this: 1) Fan runs stock @ low rpms < 1,000 2) They connect to dimmer that sets the speed to your preference 3) they are designed to allow motherboard control its speed based on the internal temp of the case.

I rebuilt my computer last month and designed it to run cool using Intel Ivy Bridge so it didn't need loud fans to move a lot of air. I'd recommend one of these case fans.

But just remember any of these "quiet" fans will be loud if run at high rpms, you can't change physics.

I tried larger diameter fans, which helped a bit but not enough, so finally built a sound proof box to go over the computer when doing work that required getting rid of fan noise.

Have since found two other uses for the box:
1. For putting my laptop in when filming and using it to drive my teleprompter - fan comes on about 20secs of every minute!!!
2. As box for putting the mic in when recording voice overs, etc.
