NO! Recording audio without metering and monitoring is exactly like framing and focusing without looking at the viewfinder. There is no audio technique that obviates proper monitoring.

A boom certainly does not relieve the camera operator of monitoring the audio.

I try to to both, but if there isn't time then I decide based on:

- Room reverberation
- How wide the shot is
- Background noise
- Movement
- Obstructions (like necklaces or hair that might contact a lav)
- Clothing

I hadn't heard the idea of mounting two mics on either side, although I suppose that neither one would be as optimal as a center placement for the vast majority of the time when the head is facing forward.

As my doc said. "Don't worry about misplacing your keys, we all do that as we get older." He said the time to worry is when you find them and you say to yourself. "What are these things and what are they for?"
