Portable Sound Recorder for Shotgun Mike? at DVinfo.net

I have a recently purchased Sennheiser MKE600 shotgun mike to go with both my Lumix MFT cams and my Sony NX800 video camera.
I frequently shoot videos (of birds) in slow motion, hence no audio is recorded.
I'd therefore like a portable and small field recorder to which my MKE600 can be attached so I can record audio independently of video. Nothing too expensive, not more than the cost of the mike.

Any suggestions please?

Hi Ronald. I suggest you call audio shops in your area, find out what models they have, ask can you test record something while you’re there, check reviews and prices on line, then visit that shop with your Senn. mic and headphones - and try it.

What recorder seems right on line might not be right for you when you test record something. The more work you put into this, the better the result. Good luck, for others let’s know how you go.

I have a nice collection of shotguns - short ones through to very long ones, and the I rather like Zoom recorders - never had any issues with them and the quality is very good. They are pretty touch too.

If you are starting out - you can find the original H6 at very sensible prices now the mk 2 version is the one people are buying. 4 XLR channels and a stereo channel, which comes in pretty handy too. Gain matches typical shotguns like your 600. I do have the bigger version, but apart from being a bit easier to use wearing gloves, the H6 does a great job. The biggest problem with shotguns is the shock mount and wond covers - these really add up cost wise. The foam types really are pretty poor!
