I use a 10db inline att. PLUS mic ATT on . .. very very close in work that. Video looks great!

You might consider a pair of AT3031's for stereo. A/B and X/Y micing is usually done with cardioids or hypercardioids instead of omnis.

Thanks Dave. Any vids online?? Are you happy with the results?? How clear is the sound? Do you get that huge live sound? Or an airy thin kinda' sound? What style of music do you normally shoot?

I know you don't normally use omni mics but if I only have one mounted on my cam and I am only shooting with one cam the sound with an omni would be more neutral as I pan, shoot different members of the band. Agree??

Shea, no vids online. I shoot mostly classic
rock. The sound is mid between fat and thin.
You can always eq it in post.

Stereo sounds better. I use NT4 for that.

You probably won't do a whole lot better than
3032 for on-board mic.

Not really. An omni will pick up from all directions, including beside and behind you. There'll be more extraneous sound, camera handling and your breath noises, etc. A cardioid pattern gives you a "squashed baloon" in front of your camera, most of the whole stage being in the pickup pattern but less stuff from the rear.

When I shoot with my 3032 omni around bands,
the band is mostly all you hear, it's so loud. No
camera noise, no breath noise, not much ambiance.
The audio with the omni is a lot more stable as
compared to a (cardioid) directional mic I used,
that's one of the main reasons I use omni.
Use stereo only if you can stabilize it in one
decent center position.

Maybe the sound was screwed up coming from the soundboard. ;)

Did the band keep looking accusingly at the soundguy?

I'm sure the band pretty well drowneds out camera noise etc. I'm not so sure that the room reflections and crowd sounds wouldn't interfere with good music recording though and a cardioid would help reduce them.

As an aside, how do you like your 3032 generally speaking? Just got a 3031 yesterday and will add a second to it to make a stereo pair as soon as the store has another in stock. Was debating the AT versus Rode NT5's or Oktava's. Haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet though.

one more thought-
were you running the ntg-1 off of its battery instead of phantom? a weak battery could definitely get you into the kind of trouble you described. (even healthy batteries worsen your max spl, s to n and all that stuff compared to running the same mic off phantom.)

as to the omni or not thing, i do concerts with omnis all the time and i'm generally pleased. sometimes a pair, sometimes a single omni mixed with a feed from the main board.
