Microtrack 24/96 Mono Mode

M-Audio has released a firmware update that gives the unit mono recording capability. But in my first non-scientific test, the mono mode did not sound as clear as the stereo mode.

Has anyone else who has downloaded the update experienced the same problem?

24/96 is pretty over-rated UNLESS you have really good convertors and clocks to go along with it. My guess, though I have no experience with that unit, is that the microtrack's convertors aren't able to give an accurate representation of your audio at 24/96. If stereo sounds better at lower resolutions... that what I'd do.

Resolution and bit depth aren't the primary indicators of quality in digital audio. Convertors, clocks, and good source material is.

At any rate, its a common story that consumer and pro-sumer grade audio interfaces don't sound as good when bumped up the 24/96. I stick to 24/44.1 for audio projects and 24/48 for video projects.

Take care,
Chris

I typically use 44.1/24 for my recordings. It was just strange that the stereo sounded better, even though the mono source was recorded on only one track, than the mono recording.
