well, I am not very experienced, but I'd say:

a mono shutgun is prefered if you e.g. have to catch the voice of somebody in front of your cam, as in an interview, or a filmset. But then you may want to use a wired or wireless Lav anyway, or the mono shutgun mounted on a pole. If you are in a tele zoom range and what you see is a bit far in front you also want the sound from just in front, not from the side, hence a mono shotgun would be the better choice.

However if you are filming ambience or are using a wideangle adapter e.g. in a city I'd prefer a stereo mic capturing a more natural sound with a wider angle.

I never really understood why a mono shutgun often is recomended as a first mic, since I believe that most hobby videographers are filming while travelling, or a birthday party asf. where I believe a stereo mic fits better.

What seems to put the new Rode SVM apart, maybe among other reasons, is that is has got both a shockmount and a windcat included, besides - hopefully - producing good recordings.

Hi Dave - yep I'm certainly not 100% certain at all on that.
I think I *may* have been thinking of the new Rode NT55 instead about having the same (or v similar) capsules as the NT5.

NT55 has in-built 10db or 20db attenuator pad, 3-position low-cut filter, and interchangeable capsules (2 caps supplied with the mic: one omni, one cardioid).

Dave Largent August 24th, 2006 01:36 PM

I've never heard of the NT55. Is it out now?

Jay Massengill August 24th, 2006 02:07 PM

I don't know if it's out yet but they do have the description on the Rode website:
http://www.rodemic.com/?pagename=Products&product=NT55
They really need to make a hyper capsule for this and the NT6.

So, it's going to come with a card and an
omni head? What type of pricing, do you
think? Less than the NT5, would be nice.

Excellent point! I always tell people that if they are only going to buy one good mic or they are buying their first mic and it will be a while before they can buy another that a single point stereo cardoid is probably the best choice. It's more versatile than a shotgun in several ways. It can be made to work with dialog in a pinch (knowing how to deal with phase cancelling problems is a must) and it can record a live band much better than a shotgun IMO.

Rode makes excellent mics and the price of the VM is so good that I'm sure many people suggest it as a first mic because it is the best bang for the buck. It's pro quality at budget prices. That's a hard combination to ignore. And I'm sure the SVM is excellent too but I haven't heard any samples yet.

I certainly don't want to take anything away from Rode. If you get a chance to hear their mics compared to other stuff in the same price range you'll quickly see why people like them so much.

I would suggest the SVM as a first mic or as an only mic to just about everyone unless they had some specific task they wanted to do that requires a shotgun or whatever. There are other good stereo cardoids for less money but IMO they aren't in the same league as the Rode mics. Both the SVM and the VM are on my "to get soon" list. For now I've had to make do with lower priced mics which I like too. But someday soon I will have both of these mics I hope.

Yes, comes with cardioid and omni head, plus a nice box, variable pad, variable low-cut-filter.

In UK its going to be GBP199. At same store as the one i got that price off, the NT5 is GBP109, so no definitely not less than the NT5, but thats hardly surprising if it comes with 2 capsules. Think it is also supplied with mic stand etc.

check out www.rode.com.au
good info there.

Edit: Found US site where its quoting $349 USDollars. (which is apparenly $150 less than MSRP!)

Well I got back an unequivocal reply - "No, they are dedicated capsules for this mic."

Andreas Griesmayr August 29th, 2006 07:38 AM

249 USD in the US

Ah there you go - thanks for that confirmation Graham.
- I think as i said above, i must have been thinking about the new NT55 instead ! I'm pretty certain that the NT55 shares one of its 2 capsules with the NT5, or at least a 'interchangeable' version thereof.

Dave Largent August 29th, 2006 12:06 PM

When is that NT55 suppose to be out? I look forward
to hearing some feedback from the first users!
Anyone planning right now to get it?

There's no hyper capsule so it's not what you want.

As for the stereo vs mono mic discussion. You can have both. Get an Audio Technica AT 835ST.

Ty Ford

WOW, this one looks like the ultimate microphone for video, is it?
( had problem tolook it up at the AT site, it says: 'not available in your area' for USA, Europe, England )
