samson C03U - Applet & headphone problem on pc.

Just got the C03U mike and no problems loading & having it recognised by my pc (XP pro 3.0ghz).
I'm running Adobe Audition & V.6 of the old Sound Forge.
I thought that I could just plug my headphones & get immediate response while in record mode. Nope! Playback is no problem & it's registering on the Sound Forge VU & recording fine. But no cans while recording. Tried to configure thru my control panel speaker setup & still no luck.
My speaker setup are Edirol MA-20D digital speakers. That is, digital input into the speakers from digital input from computer (Asus P4P800-E board).
Anybody had the same problem? I'm not usually illiterate about these things, but on this occasion....
Would appreciate if someone could assist in directing the best way I can listen to headphones whilst talking into the C03U.
My previous setup was a small yamaha mixer (MG12/4) which proved very reliable & the headphones were naturally plugged into that.
Thankfully it's still set up for the time being. But in the quest for less on my desk, the ideal would be just the the C03U & the headphones.
Appreciate any help.

Make sure the software is setup to allow input monotring during recording. The signal goes from the mic to the software to the output but the defaults don't send it to the output in real time.
