Long Distance Voiceover

Im in the need to record a voice over of an actor that is now in California.
(im in FL)

I was thinking I could mail him a microphone (ATR 55 or some thing) and a small digital voice recorder with an input. I would have to give him good instruction, tell him to unplug the fridge, turn off the AC and crawl into his closet and start recording.

The recorder of course would need to be 16bit ect, and easy enough for him to use.

If any one has been in this situation before I would love to hear how you worked around it.

(*note* he doesnt have access to a computer in his house.)

Is it actually a voice-over or are you doing dialogue replacement?

Its just a voice over, we got lucky and we dont need ADR

I would suggest that he contact a local radio station and see what the cost for use of thier sound room would be. You could of course send him to a full blown studio too, depending on the size of the project.

Is there a specific need for that mic?

Just tossing around ideas.

Depending on where he is at in California, there are literally thousands of studios in the metropolitan areas (LA, Sacramento, Fresno, Bay Area, San Diego, etc.). By the time you spend the money to ship everything there and back, like Randall said, find a small studio that doesn't charge very much. Another suggestion is contact a video production company that can just record the voice-over to one of their cameras and dump it to a CD - It will certainly be as good if not better than him sitting in his closet recording the whole thing.

BTW, What part of California?

Orange County, Im still geting details (Im waiting for the call from the editor) thanks for the sugestions guys and if any of you have the gear and are willing to knock it out some after noon send me an e-mail.

I would be happy to do it for you, but unfortunately, we are 4 hours north of Orange County. The only time we make it down that way is if we have a shoot in the LA area, which is often, but the next one down that way is not for another month or so. If you ever have any needs in the Fresno Area, let me know.

ill send you an e-mail if any thing pops up in fresno
