M Audio has a 49 key controller for $99

You can use your regular keyboard as your midi controller, if you are feeling especially cheap: http://www.bome.com/midi/keyboard/

I cant beleive you actually said that!

Said what? It's true you can use a real keyboard, for a while I was using my old Yamaha with a midi to usb converter box, they're not expensive.

It might be wise to make a distinction here. If you want to hook up a MIDI keyboard to a PC, the PC will also require a MIDI interface. Is this something you have already?

If not then you might want to eliminate that additional expense and investigate keyboards with a USB connector. The M-Audio portable keyboards have both MIDI and USB, as do many modern models I suspect, but if you already have a MIDI interface there are many MIDI only bargains to be had on the second hand market, where you will get much more for your money.

Happy shopping!

Colin

my opinion is that midi is dead for a controller. USB controllers can be powered by computer, and there is no need to buy interface. that doesnt mean midi itself is dead, but USB is more reliable. No midi echoes!
