Sennheiser dropped the priced of the Flashmic

I always thought the Flashmic was really cool, but a bit overpriced. Well as of April 26, 07 it's now $400 less at $999. Here's a short video if you're unfamiliar http://www.dvcreators.net/hhb-drm85-flashmic/

At NAB they also released a cardioid version, so now there is a choice between omni or cardioid. Compared to carrying around a mic + cable, the 1GB Flashmic makes a lot of sense for getting content under pressure. Especially since it uses off the shelf AA batteries and can begin recording with the push of one button. Fairly idiot proof as opposed to a lot of recording devices.

I used to gather sound with a bullet proof HHB minidisc recorder, thinking back on it now, the Flashmic makes a lot more sense. I now use a Edirol R-4 because of the 4 channel input, but for single channel the Flashmic is getting to where it might be worth it for backup audio, podcasting, gathering ambient sound and recording VO. Esp. for photographers or videographers in places where it's too obtrusive to bring in a big ole HD camera.

Compared to a Zoom H4, I'd have to say the Flashmic has better sound quality, a better, more solid, rugged feel and definitely a greater ease of use. But heck with the zoom being 1/3 third the cost it's hard to argue with. Just another piece of gear that may fit in your bag of tricks.

Just off the back of this, Zoom are releasing the H2 this month. I have already ordered mine.

It's much cheaper than the H4 and can record in different sound field types including it seems some kind of matrixed 5.1 (don't now how yet)
