Wind protection
I've searched this forum top to bottom, and can't find a post someone once made (maybe it wasn't here) about being able to protect a mic in winds of around 100mph while still providing a reasonable recording level.
Does anyone have any idea of where that might have been claimed, or have ideas that might help me accomplish wind filtering at 140 mph? |
I've heard, but not actually tried, that wrapping a lav mic in a non-lubricated condom works well in high wind situations. I know they do a good job of protecting the mic from sweat / rain / etc., but I haven't shot anything in high winds in a long time to try that part of it out.
Good luck, Jeremiah |
It takes a special sort of mind to want to jump out of a perfectly servicable airplane! <grin>

What kind of setup are you imagining? If you're jumping out of a plane, will the mic be mounted somewhere? Will it be boomed?
If it's mounted, you might be able to make some kind of stationary wind deflector . . maybe a V-shape or cone with a zeppelin inside it, pointing towards the fat side. I've only ever recorded around 60mph, which was fine for a zep. This sounds like an interesting project . . |
You weren't trying to remember the discussion on the DPA Windpac or was that it? They say 85mph gusts.
|
I don't think it was the DPA, I would have likely remembered, as I've had a very bad customer service issue with DPA.
In my mind, it was a furball that someone had come up with a recipe for. This application is for recording someone in freefall/HALO jump. I could use a Vanquish throat mic, but that doesn't offer a quality that fits my desire. |
you can try place capsul with fur over inside rycote or schoeps over capsule baby ball , wrap it with fure over .
i did very high wind situations ( not like that ) schops with foam inside its small ball fure over inside complete zepp , worked |

I'm curious to know myself since I will be shooting high speed car shoots. |
if your problem is to record voice (what else could you record in such situation ?), you can try some mic that fit into ears, recording voice from inside the ear.
i think JABRA is doing some sort of headset for mobile phone. http://www.1800mobiles.com/42770u.html http://www.mfjenterprises.com/produc...rodid=MFJ-283I http://www.acesuppliers.com/company/...ion_18954.html the only drawback is these headsets could be problematic with heavy change of pressure. |
