Recomended 35mm lenses for 35mm adapters
 

I will list some 35mm lenses recomended for use in 35mm adapters. The lenses in this list are the best to avoid vigneting and hotspot. The lenses I will list is full size frame lenses, not the aps sized for small sensors. I do not recomend the Canon EOS EF and the Nikon G series because they do not have the f/stop ring. Buy lenses with the rear glass with 20mm diameter or bigger. best rear glass are 25mm diameter or bigger. Just buy zoom lenses with constant aperture f2.8 or f3.5. The zoom lenses with variable aperture f2.8-4.0 works good too. Wide angle fixed focal lenses with f2.8 or darker aperture are not so good due to vignetting.

Hi Lee,

The Nikon 70-300mm doesn't seem to have manual aperture settings. Do you find it still works ok on a 35mm adapter? It's only about $100 so I'm wondering if it's an ok cheap zoom lens?

The nikon 70-300mm seems to be a good lens. I saw the video and I did not see hotspot or vignetting. Soon I will upload 4 videos showing 4 different zoom lenses with diafragm ring. I will put the links here.

Matthew, my Nikon 70-300mm has got an aperture ring (f4-f32) I bought it cheap at a store in town last weekend (London UK).

I think it works like this: the overwhelimg majority of lenses are now aimed at DSLR users (where the money is) so they are fading out the manual aperture models, but if you look around you can still get most current lenses in manual aperture configurations.

I have an automatic lens with no manual aperture control (Nikon 18-135) and to use it fully open it I just stick a bit of rolled up paper in the bit that keeps the iris open on the back of the lens - basically if you have a lens without manual aperture control, roll up a bit of paper and stick in in the little bit that keeps the aperture blades fully open, then (if needed) reduce the exposure on the video camera.

I think the lack of vignetting and a hotspot may be also down to the SGPro design (??) - I have used the same lenses on other adaptors and have picked up much more vignetting and a more obvious hotspot with those other adaptors.

Of course I could be wrong, there are so many factors to consider !

Note:

All the movies I posted where shot from the exact same position (the tripod did not move) which should give you a reasonable idea of the field of view.

For example the Sigma 50mm seems to have a slightly wider field of view than the Nikon 50mm.

vignetting
 

I think vignetting is different in each setup, is a combination of 35mm lens, 35mm adapter and the camcorder. The SGpro is a killer adapter with big camcorders but I saw many sgpro videos with vignetting when used with the HV20 and the HV20 owners says SGpro is not so good to work with the HV20 even with a 50mm lens. I used the Apefos 35mm adapter with the HV20 and I got excelent results.
