48 Hour Film - Shot on Letus35 Flipped

Hey yall,

Here's the link to my 48 hour short film "House Of Blu"

http://media.putfile.com/House-Of-Blu

The film was shot on the DVX100A with the Letus35 Flipped, using 28 and 50mm Nikon lenses. It was edited in Vegas 6, with a little help in After Effects.

This was for the Phoenix 48 hour challenge... www.thea3f.net

Here's the guidelines:
Length: 0-7min
Theme: Mistaken Identity
Line: "I don't think this is going to work."
Prop: Someone had to be watering a plant at some point during the movie.

I'll find out soon enough if I get anything for it.

I saw the video on "putfil" - *Excellently shot* I must say! Wonderful, a feast for the eye. The audio was decent too.. but the acting was absolutely dreadful. :( It stung my soul actually >.<

But, this is luckily a forum dedicated mostly to technical aspects, and your photo was flawless! Loved the postproduction work too, very rich on feeling. Maybe you emphasized the short DOF a little bit too much, too often, but if nothing else, it gave an eerie feeling that the actors could not provide if their lives were at stake ;)

Two thumbs up for the photo :D

Haha...something tells me Andreas didn't like the acting...

I have to agree with him though--the cinematography was great, but not everyone's an actor. :)

Marcus Marchesseault March 2nd, 2006 09:12 AM

The production looked professional. It is good enough that if seen on a television people would not know it was not shot on film with a professional crew. The editing was also fairly well-paced and on the mark.

***DON'T READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM***

I don't want to bring someone down if they aren't looking for ways to improve.

On the other hand, the dialog was rough which fed into the acting. There is no way to act your way out of cliche' dialog. It also did not flow like normal conversational language. The villian seemed like he was the sort of person that is killing people because his latte was served at the wrong temperature. There was no reasoning for his maliciosness shown. He did not emote anything, nor did he have any indications of pathology except for that he kills people. Anger, disgust, confusion, revenge, jealousy, greed, insanity are good motivations for murder. If it is just a game, why does he like playing the game?

The male cop's annoyance at having to get out of the car to storm the house seemed absurd. I don't think any cop would be blase' when storming a house.

I HATE when the credits are half the movie.

Sean Michael March 2nd, 2006 10:52 AM

Haha... I couldn't agree with you guys more. I appreciate the feedback.

Yeah they weren't professional actors, but friends of one of the writers that I met the day of. The only stage actress that we had in there was the girl that was tied up.

It get screened tonight at the AMC theaters, I also find out if I get any awards.

Mike Oveson March 2nd, 2006 11:16 AM

I thought it looked really good for the most part. I didn't care for the coloration during most of the "inside" shots, but that's just my taste I suppose. The acting was ok. I've seen much worse. I also was a little miffed that the credits were the last half of the movie, but I guess if you had to hit 7 minutes that's one way to do it. :D Good work though, and best of luck on the screening tonight. Let us know how it goes please.

havent finished watching yet

FAVORITE quote "..it's just, it's just not his style."

HAHA holy crap, that line, thats like, too hilarious, i wouldnt call it bad acting, thats just pure genius comedy. The way he repeats himself. oh man. good job. you made my night so far.

Forrest Schultz March 3rd, 2006 08:43 PM

oh mother F .. hahaha. fire the cop guy! his acting is just cracking me up. or fire the guy who gave him those lines. haha. sorry, its just so much fun. everyone has to watch this.

Leo Mandy March 4th, 2006 11:05 AM

I liked the editing, it was slick.

Xavier Etown March 4th, 2006 03:46 PM

I thought the editing and camera angles were good. Acting was OK--it was a 48 hour filmfest after all.

So, how did you film those outdoor scenes without scaring the neighbors? Must've been a large crew and lots of equipment out there.

So a cop shoots a person and no call for backup or EMS? ;)

Sean Michael March 4th, 2006 06:56 PM

Yes... no back up... The cop didn't want to be held responsible for the death, therefore he stalls... Ha ha I don't know. He might have called backup right after the phone call.

It's a movie in 48 hours.

Sean Michael March 4th, 2006 07:04 PM

And actually we did get the cops called on us because some of the neighbors thought a "drug deal" was going down because they saw the guns. You would think they would see a boom guy, a camera, and people with reflectors... but I guess not.

The cop was real cool though, we got to continue filming.

Ken Lamug March 5th, 2006 11:39 AM

QUestion, how big was the screen that it showed on and how did it look like?

Xavier Etown March 5th, 2006 04:48 PM

Good question. I'd like to know how the final showing went.

Sean Michael March 5th, 2006 11:22 PM

It was a standard movie theater screen in the AMC. It was one of their big theater rooms as opposed to their smaller ones... It looked good, obviously not like film, but good...

Sean Michael March 6th, 2006 03:12 PM

Shot on letus35 flipped and dvx100a with 28 and 50mm nikon lenses... edited in vegas 6.

It's a WIP so it will probably change, the group wants to do some motorcycle shots... That means lots and lots of light!!

Aaron Koolen March 7th, 2006 01:21 AM

Hey Sean, how do you find the flipped to use? I know there were concerns about other Letus' and dust inside, have you had any problems with it?

Also, what do you use for rails?

Cheers
Aaron

Sean Michael March 7th, 2006 10:16 AM

I really like using the Letus35 Flipped... Great piece of equipment! There was a dust speckle in mine, but you really have to look in order to notice it... I'll probably clean it out later on. Quyen usually dust proofs every unit.

As for my rails, I use a Manfroto Telephoto lens support unit... works great! And it only costed me $60. I wish I could just get a shoulder mount.

Joshua Provost March 7th, 2006 11:46 AM

Sean,

I was at the screening. Wasn't sure at the time if you had used an adaptor or applied selective blurring in post. Way to go to use an adaptor when under such a time crunch.

Josh
