View Full Version : Recommended RAIDs?

I need to do a project with an HDCAM source tape and Vegas. I'll have the HDCAM tape captured to a USB hard drive (and backup) as an uncompressed AVI file. But for editing, I will want to use a RAID. What do you recommend?

BTW, this is 1080i. Multiplying out 1080 x 1920 x 30fps x 8bits x 3colors yields about 1.5 Gbps. No audio needed.

Thanks for your suggestions!

RAID-0 is the only way to go. It's the fastest. No backup though, if you lose one of the two drives, they are both worthless.

USB won't be fast enough to capture that uncompressed, you'll need a caldigit HD pro tower raid or similar to get high enough write speeds.

PS - 1920x1080 @ 30fps @ 8-bit RGBA = 248.83 MBytes/S = 897.87 GB per hour according to AJA's data rate calculator...

No way you can get a 2 disk array to sustain a 240+ MB/s stream. You need at least 4 disks minimum in Raid0, depending on the fill rate of your disks. If you go over 50-60% fill rate you may need 6 disks or more.

I submit that fiber channel raid is the only way to get these data rates in a scalable, rational way.
