Hey guys,

I'm filming using a Z1 to try to convert to a somewhat realistic 24p.

I've been filming using 50i, with Cineframe 25 off. Then, taking into HDLink with Frame Mode set to Progressive to force the progressive, deinterlace unchecked, and the rate change 25p->23.97p 4.1%.

Should I be filming with Cineframe 25? As well, is the force progressive the way to go to deinterlace? Using my current settings I'm actually really happy with the results, just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on small tweaks that might improve the final results. For now, all projects are going out as a DVD, but I'm retaining HD masters for the future.

Forcing the progressive mode on the encoder doesn't deinterlace. If you have 50i sources you need to have de-interlace set. The look between 50i deinterlaced to 25p/24p and shooting CineFrame 25 is different, you should try both and choose. Deinterlacing 50i will give more vertical resolution but more motion blur.

Vertical resolution is a major concern; though I always have the fallback of 60i. I'd really like to accomplish a high-quality 24p using the Z1, but I'm well aware that the good old cinematic look is more in the way things are shot. :)

So far, the motion blur with deinterlacing the 50i has been negligible, as it's mainly nature shots, nothing moving too fast. It's actually came out rather realistic. I haven't pushed the limits of it with any real action though, just a few cars driving by and people walking.

I'll probably try CF25 just for kicks, but I don't think the loss of resolution would be worth it given that I'd like to be able to brag about full 1080p24 to clients who know their broadcast spec stuff. :D
