Found this press release on the Panasonic Japan website:
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/news_info/news07/07_012.html

Talks about a number of new P2 partners for various products, but the one I found most interesting was that Fuji is introducing a line of P2-compatible cards. Unlike the proposed Hoodman H2 cards, these Fuji cards are apparently fully licensed and guaranteed to be compatible.

Should be introduced in Spring 2008.

Sorry for some damper - but, I have a feeling the price of any 3rd party P2 cards won't be that much cheaper than Panasonic's offering, initially. However, it can increase the availability of P2 cards - and in the long term, price would fall. I doubt Fuji's price at release will be a big discount from Panasonic's.

The exciting thing about this is not that Fuji will provide a bargain basement product - they won't, they are pretty high-end. I shoot their 16mm film regularly and like it alot; and have one of their lenses on my HPX500 - the exciting thing is that another major media manufacturer sees a viable future market for P2 cards...

Which means more aftermarket P2 products and support, especially in post production workflow where it's needed...

And, eventually, as TingSern intimates, a lot more cards in use, which will ultimately mean much lower cost...

Remember when an 18g hard drive cost $2200 - wasn't THAT long ago...

Very good news. Maybe the prices will start falling with some competition!

They have been falling over the nearly two years since the intro.

Just want to see them fall more.

P2 started out at about $1,000 per gigabyte. It's down below $50 per gigabyte already. Sure there's still lots of room to go, but it's definitely been falling!

I am dreaming of the day when P2 cards cost 10% to 20% more than the equivalent CompactFlash capacity :-). Which I doubt will happen.
