Ok, I'll be using my XL2 to do a series of videos soon, and I'll need a mic for capturing general room noise. There won't be much going on (no dialog), just need to pick up ambiance etc. I figured on cam would be fine for that, but I'd like to upgrade the mic. I need to purchase a Schoeps CMC 641 soon: would that work well? I know it's an awesome mic, but would it be the right tool for the job in this situation?

Hello Dale,

I have an XL2. The on camera mic on mine is actually pretty good.

The CMC641 is not really an on-camera mic. It's a great boom mic.

I'm going to say stick with what you have and use the money towards the Schoeps a mixer like the Sound Devices 302, or MixPre (with line to mic cables), a boom, mixer to camera snake with breakaway cable and some good headphones.

Ty,

Yeah, that's kind of what I was afraid of - the CMC641 not being a good cam mic.

However, as soon as I can afford a 302 (and eventually an SD 702) with boom, that is the way I will go - especially once I need to do some interviews.

Thanks for the reply!
