My customer's DVD menu doesn't work on one of his DVD players, and I have had this issue on some relatively rare occasions in past. How to improve compatibility? The menu had an image background (png), not a movie; had text links for menu items, not buttons or images, and it had no scene selections menu.

He said the first movie played fine but the other selections would not, but it played on other players fine. I know some older players have issues.

in 99% of cases when a DVD doesn't play it's the player itself not reading it. I understand that in this case it read the first movie but in my mind it's the player not the DVD. If the DVD plays in other players without problem then why would it not play in this particular player? Logically if it's not playing or only playing partially it's the player.
I've got 3 players that will play anything including pancakes without syrup :-0
and I've got another player that WILL NOT play anything I burn. Here's the rub. That player and 1 that plays everything I burn are the same brand. Different models and BOTH are at least 5 years old.
Strange and goofy but that's electronics for you. ;-)

Well, thanks Don. I felt it was likely the player, but just want to be as compatible as possible. I already told the customer it was the player, and that DVDs burned on PCs aren't always as compatible as commercially made discs.

Thanks for helping me to understand that there isn't much I can do about it!
