Are there any good sites where I could download for free, atmospheric tracks, and learn a bit more about adding the right music to a production, adding 'stings' etc.

And also possibly learn a bit more about 'Foley' - which materials are best for creating certain sound effects.

Anything would help.

There are actually quite a few sites that offer sound effects, some for free some for fee. I've found this hub-type site useful in the past:

I don't know of any books or sites dealing with Foley techniques.

foley is very much like shooting. half the fun is being creative and using your imagination to capture the shot/sound. get your hands on a recordable MD or a DAT, and a good mic and the world is your oyster. you'd be surprised just how many sounds can be fornd just in your own house and backyard.

Any of the Sony MD recorders are good. Pay special care to the mic you buy.

Sony make a pretty good mic specifically for recording to MD/DAT. I can't remember the model number but it says DIGITAL on the box. It's got a selectable pick up pattern between 90 - 120 degrees and it's not too expensive.

The mic in question is the Sony ECM-MS907 (they may have a different model # by now). It records GREAT audio, except that it has absolutely no bass whatsoever. I think the thing cuts off at around 200Hz, but I'm probably wrong.

I will look into it now in a bit more depth, now I know where to start. I think I will also try out the model we use at college - thats Sony and the mic has the 90/120 degree switch, i'm guessing thats probably the one.
