Nice job James! Love the last dolly shot. Also reminds me of JAWS, when the sheriff sees the shark on the beach for the first time.

My encode looks pretty bad compared to this. I'm going to try and re-submit at 1280x720. Any secrets to getting things to look good on Vimeo? Do they do another compression pass like youtube?

Paul,

Don't think I have many tricks when it comes to encoding video for Vimeo. My usual workflow is to render out the video first to a cineform avi (1280X720) and then render out this cineform intermediate file to a Mainconcept AVC file with the .h264 preset in Vegas. I up the bitrates from their default settings to something like 10 000 000 max, 5 000 000 average.

I know that Vimeo does make a flash recompression for the low res version of any clips but I don't know about the high def if it is compressed again. I suspect it is not but I couldn't say for sure.

All the best,
James

Thanks James, I just did a re-encode and it looks much better now! It's great that they let you swap out the video without losing all the comments etc.

hi Ram

It was edited in avid, so i folow their Avid instructions for uploading hd video in Vimeo. Which Nle system do you use?

Ram Shani

premiere pro 2

but what codec?

Pedro Martins

ram

i edited hdv footage then i exported quicktime 720p, h.264, 5000 kbits/sec and i don´t deinterlace it because i already use timewarp fx, in avid, to make it progressive

cheers

why you are not use in camera progressive?

Pedro Martins

hi ram

the camera, v1, doesn´t do "real" progressive, it simulates progressive in a interlaced stream. i use that simulation, but when i capture it´s interlaced...

This is a one minute compilation of test shots done with my Letus Extreme, my XH-A1, and two different lenses: a cheap Tokina 28-200mm f/3.5 and an excellent Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 L. A couple of the shots are not quite as sharply focused as they appeared in the view finder at the time -- an argument for getting a decent external monitor when using the Letus. But by and large, you can certainly get a good feel for the kind of thing the Letus gives you.

Pedro,

Nice work! - Beautiful stuff. I'm assuming you're setting up a table for your tabletop skate dolly for each of those shots, including the dense foliage stuff? If so, wow... lots of work but the shots pay off!
