I am about to buy an iMAC for editing HD material from the Sony EX1.
I will be running Final Cut Pro.

My question is regarding memory for the iMAC.

I want to install 4 gig of memory.

My question is:

It appears to be cheaper to buy the extra memory for the iMAC not from the Apple resellers.

So can people inform me whether it is easy to buy memory for the iMAC and installing this memory is a pretty easy affair?

For example what is the best memory to buy?

Thanks

You have not clarified which iMac you have but, based on logical derivation, I will presume the new Aluminum iMac.

Apple does not make Ram, they buy it just like you and I. Some guidelines to follow...

If you consider using Kingston Ram, do NOT get the prefix KVR.
There seems to be quite a few problems with the Value Ram. Instead, use the prefix KTR.

My personal preference is with OWC (www.owc.com)

I bought 4 gigs (2 2gig sticks) for just under $100.00 including shipping.

Buy all of the ram at the same time as this increases the chances that you will get matched modules.

Hope this helps.

I bought a couple gigs of Corsair "Mac Memory (http://www.corsair.com/products/notebook_memory.aspx)" for a 17" imac and have had no issues in the past year. Installation is quite simple if you look at the directions on the apple support site. They have very good photos.

I highly recommend Otherworld Computing for RAM and high quality hard drives. I just purchased 4 gigs(matched set) from them for less than $100 and my imac performs great.
