So this is pretty basic I think...but for some reason has me stumped. I'm trying to open up a DVD of a straight cut version of my show that was recorded on a Sony DVD recorder. When I try to open it in FCP the .VOB files open up to only be roughly 15 seconds long. How do I open the files so I can edit out a part of the show? Oh..theres no audio either. I think I need a program to convert the files, but don't really want to lose quality. I'm going to probably try "mpeg streamclip" to convert as soon as I get home.

Hi Matt,
If you are referring to a DVD based camcorder (the kind that record directly to a DVD or a miniDVD, yeah, those things are maybe OK for kindling, at the most. But that's just my opinion (and that of several others in the forums). You're probably going to need mpegstreamclip, as you noted, to properly extract the files with the synced audio from the muxed formatting. Other applications can also do the job, (some free other not, some boxed, others downloadable - but many swear by mpegstreamclip.)

In any case, for FCP based Q & A and other topics related to Mac based editing, you will have much better luck posting such content directly to the dedicated Mac based threads farther down in the forums.
