Hello.

I had a first edition DVX100 from 2003. The firewire pin was damaged and it will not allow capturing. Everything else on the camera functions. It records but will not allow capture over firewire. The firewire was fried when the camara was hooked up to a bad computer. (long story)

I sent it to a shop but they said it would cost $500 to 700 to have the board with the damaged chip replaced that allows the firewire to work. I dont belieave that its worth it on this old camera with a lot of miles / hours on it.

So i am wondering if there is a cheap Panasonic camera that i could buy that allows capturing from the tapes in 24p/ 30p progressive modes. Or a deck but decks are pretty expensive. I have noticed that if i try capturing with a Canon XL2 there are often problems.

Anyway, for a camera this old and used i dont think its worth the money to have it fixed.

Hi there

You can capture 24p or 30p on any mini-DV camcorder normally. There might be some problem with your xl2 but i am pretty sure it was an exception.

I know i did capture 24p material from a dvx100b with my old pv-dv601 without problem.

Good luck

Phil

BTW, even if you get a really basic 200$ dv camera...at least this money will also give you a "emergency cam" + a cheap deck. It is another good reason to buy a small cam instead of repairing the firewire port
