Hi guys,

Is there anybody out there from the Edius users with a knowledge on this:

Which could be the fastest and simplest way of achieving SD 4:3 PAL 720X576 from the EX1 720 50P clips?

I decided shooting 720 50P, because I do TV News and that HD seems to be the best when the client needs the "old standard" format :-(
( the SD mpeg clip done this way looks really great and the workflow is fast )

Currently I'm using the crop option manually, but it has to be done with every selected clip, even I choose the SD template, Edius "squeezes" ( letterboxing ) the HD into the SD instead of cropping ready when dropping the clips to timeline.
I know that e.g. Adobe would give the SD 4:3 cropped right away when choosing that type of project, but I found Edius better to Adobe after testing the output of both.
( Thanks to you guys mentioning Edius on this forum earlier)

You seem all really lucky that no one requires SD 4:3 output from you :-)

Sorry, but perhaps the reason is, most of the users here work with Final Cut and not Edius? With Final Cut it's easy to output an SD sequenze: Just create a new sequenze in your choosen format, throw your HD stuff to the timeline and that's it. Ok, there are a few different setting possible to get best quality but at least, it is easy like that... You want 4:3 cropped? Choose 4:3. You want 16:9 ? No problem, choose a 16:9 sequenze...

I see, thanks anyway

This isn't a problem unique to the EX1, any 16:9 source that you want as 4:3 poses the same challenge. Would seem more logical to ask this question in an Edius forum e.g. 'How to get a 4:3 centre cutout from 16:9?'

Hoops, I've totally forgotten about the Edius forum-thanks.

Actually I was secretly hoping that someone might give a better/other HD setting for EX1 when doing ENG if the target is the SD.

I haven't actually tried exporting SD 4.3 through Procoder, as I only use 16.9 now.

You could bring your HD footge into a SD 4.3 project, then use the
layout control as it would give you pan and zoom control, but you would have to set it for each clip.

Access via Right Mouse click on each clip, then just export as AVI or whatever you like.

May be quicker, but as I said, you have more control on each clip.

Another way would be keep it in HD project, export a HQ file, then use the resize filter in Virtual Dubb to convert
to SD. 4.3.

It would definitely give you better quality.

Cheers Vaughan

Attila,
What you want to do in Edius is actually pretty easy and fast:

1. Open a 4x3 PAL project.
2. From the bin, put your EX1 files onto the timeline.
3. Create a second sequence, then nest the first sequence into the new one. At this point, all your individual clips will be just one clip.
4. Highlight your video track, then hit F7 (video layout). Two screens will open. Adjust the cropping of the left screen to fit 4x3.
5. Edit away!!

Ha, very clever Warren.

Using a second sequence to "see" only one clip.

Could save a great deal of time!

Have to remember that one. Thanks!

Create a second sequence

Hi Warren, I shall test this today - many thanks!!

So the magic works, cropping as one clip..

But now I'm just not sure why I see sometimes disturbing/fragmented lines in the pans and on the moving images.
This is something new.
Could this be happening because I'm cropping down from HD?
The TV needs interlaced material and I thought from HD progressive one can achieve fine SD interlaced??
