View Full Version : HD Monitoring - will this work?

Hi all,
I have a HD monitor with component-in only - and I'm looking to monitor my EX1 originated timeline in HD for grading purposes. (I'm also trying not to spend another $1300 for a Decklink card which I believe will accomplish this). I wondered if I went Vegas HD timeline -> 1394 out -> to a Pyro A/V link (which does a D/A conversion with component-out) and then plugged the A/V Link's component-out into my monitor. Would this do the job? Would I get an HD image - or an SD image stretched to fit the monitor?

This is as confusing as hell. What does everyone else use for Vegas-to-HD monitoring? Am I missing something or is the Decklink/AJA card the only way to do this? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Regards and thanks,
David.

If you're using firewire anywhere in that chain...you're getting SD vid stretched to fill.
Using a VGA to Component cable will let you connect the monitor to your video card's second head. If it's a DVI out, then DVI to component will accomplish the same task. Then use the Secondary Monitor function to monitor in HD from the Vegas timeline.
Otherwise, your options are effectively limited to an HDSDI out from a Xena or Decklink card, converted to component.

Hi,
thankyou for your reply Douglas, informative and useful as usual. I didn't think of going out through the video card so thank you, I have since experimented with it. Ultimately though I like having two monitors for the interface and so I think I'll spring for the I/O card after all. Again, thanks for your thoughts, most helpful.
Regards,
David.
