I am filming a theater performance and karate demo tonight at a Hilton Hotel indoors. Not sure If I should use the shotgun mic or the Caon XH-A1's on board mic. Seems the shotgun sounds a little weird indoors in small areas....not sure how big the room will be for this one. Any thoughts to help me make a decision?

A big room will sound better, because you have less or no reflections from nearby walls.
I suggest bringing the senn k6/66. Listen carefully on your headphones. If you don't like the sound it is a matter of seconds to go to the onboard mic.

Right. Even big rooms or outside environments can be problematic for interference tube shotguns.

Try both as Hubert says.
