I got this check mark in a small green circle inside a sequence window within FCP 603 and after wards, things are simply running slow or not at all.

what is this mark and how do i fix it?

The green check mark indicates that all your luminance values are inside of Broadcast Safe.

The third "radio button" from the left in the canvas window will bring up a drop down dialog. Uncheck "Show Excess Luma"

This is an Excess Luma Check. Goto View>Range Chack>Excess Luma to switch it off. The same control can also be accessed from the rightmost of those 3 oval buttons at the top of the Canvas Window.

Having this on shouldn't slow down your performance, however.

Edit: the right-hand button is called the "View pop-up-menu" this from the peachpit book.

What's a tyro?

It's a novice or beginner. I would recommend lynda.com's training, as you can ala carte by several different subscription plans.

If you're looking for a set of dvd's, I've had good luck with Total Training back when I was learning After Effects. They now have a similar subscription plan for online content, but only by the year.

I've actually found the Peachpit books to be very comprehensive, provided you go through the whole book. Not always the easiest thing to do when all you want is a nugget of information.
