Next winter I will be in Cambodia for 6 months and I am planning to do a documentary.
I will be working with a canon xh A1 and the format will be HDV. I am not sure yet if I will have all the time a sound/boomoperator. I have a collegue coming over and the rest of the time I am hoping that me girlfriend can sometimes fall in. It will happen that I will have to shoot alone.
I expect to shoot in many different circumstances: inside/outside/nature/city/...

I was thinking of taken an edirol 44 recorder (dont want the compressed audio and perfer 4 tracks..) for an NTG3 shotgun an sennheiser G2 serries with tram 50.
what do you think? will this setup be sufficiant? I never used the R44 and I am not sure about his preamps..

I just realized to do side by side test with Sound Devices MixPre vs Edirol R44 preamps.
It turns out they are almost the same but the MixPre has more gain (10db) than R44.

In real life the difference wouldn't be noticeable and the R44 is even cheaper than the MixPre.
I use the MixPre when not doing a double system sound with camcorders which have line level input and I get really good sound - I'm talking only about speech recording here.

You can boost the levels of the R44 in post to the level of Sound Devices 302 and you will get away with almost the same preamp noise but that's unheard of mic use.

By the way the Edirol R44 will somehow tolerate more signal overload as the MixPre's default limiter but that's has maybe something to do with the bit depth resolution of the R44.

Just be sure if you want to hassle with slating and post syncing versus direct to camera when using only two mics. I highly recommend direct to camera when you don't want all that extra work, spend more money or gain some free time to enjoy your existence.
