Kenko is a subsidiary company of HOYA, one of the finest glass makers in Japan.

If you want a front-threaded WA, get a Raynox instead (6600, 5000, 4500) or a Kenko (high grade type recommended).

Bought a Hakuba 0.6x wide angle conversion lens today for about 6000 yen. It's tiny, only 48mm wide at the front and 25mm long. It's also very light so I can just screw it on top of the filter.

It doesn't look very professional though, especially compared to the Kenko ones that I saw which were pretty big. So it might not provide the best quality. But they let me try it out at the store and at least it looked okay on the LCD screen. It seems to work okay even if I don't remove the cam's own lens hood. I'll test later though to see if it really does matter.

Peter, please let us know about the mike when you are ready - in a separate thread, perhaps? I think the built-in mike is surprisingly good, but would like to know more about the add-in you've just purchased. Congratulations, and hope you will love the camcorder as much as I do.

Thanks Patricia...I am charging the batts as I write and am trying to work thru the first layers of the Japanese menus. I will make some trials with the mike after a few days. I had an EZ30u/DJ100, a precursor to this cam. I bought the pana mike that was designed for that cam(it required a special connection, not the hotshoe setup as on the GS100) and it performed admirably...I recently shot some video at a music camp and was very, very impressed with the sound quality...

Hi, I wonder how people plan to get their GS100K serviced if the need arises? Certainly sending it back to Japan will not be realistic? Camcorder is probably one of the few electronics worth paying extended warranties for due to its moving parts. (My old Vistura is in the shop right now for the 3rd time since I bought it). This is the main concern that's kept me from getting one so far.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Nick,
Probably you might post as a new topic/thread, so that it gets best attention!(lets keep this thread just to update new owners and accessories :-)

I guess the GS100 is the best for the bucks, so many people buy directly from Japan, including me!
In case any problem we have to bear the shipping cost(around 60 to 80$) they repair and send it back to us, if its with in the warranty period. Its that simple.

99%, It wont give any problems(OR we hope it wont)

hope this helps

Hi, I wonder how people plan to get their GS100K serviced if the need arises? Certainly sending it back to Japan will not be realistic?I'm afraid that that's what you have to do. But most likely, as Samuel mentioned, most people don't have problems with their new top of the line Pana 3 chip. And as time goes on with heavy use, all cams eventually have to get serviced. (This usually happens after the warranty period.) The heads are usually the first thing to go. That said, my DVL9500s are still going strong, after 5 years of heavy use.

The one thing that really bothered me was all those poor MX300 owners who had to send their cams in for the version 1.5 "firmware" upgrade only to find out about 1 year later that there was even a newer version to "fix" the zoom problem.

But don't panic yet. I haven't heard of any GS100 problems yet. :)

There are other possibilities too. I recently had to repair my older Pana DJ100(the Japanese EZ30u). I checked around on the net and found http://www.camcorder-repairxpress.com/Index.htm.

These guys did a great job...replaced the tape transport mechanism..paid shipping and threw in a head cleaning. If my GS100 breaks down, I will send it them before sending it to Japan.

Hi all,

With the helpfull insights from this list I went ahead and bought a GS100 while on a trip to Japan.

I purchased it tax free on Sept. 10 from a discount shop in Akihabara.
I bought a Black unit along with a LW4307 w/a lens and LF43W filter kit.
I've just ordered an English remote from Panasonic as well.

Thanks for the support,
Kris

I purchased an NV-GS100-K (black) a couple of weeks ago, through my brother living in Tokyo. (It has taken me a while to get back to this forum, because I've made two trips from Honolulu to the US mainland in the meantime!)

Anyway, here's the crucial information:
Owner, Date of purchase, Source,(Price-optional), Cassette tape, SD card

John McRae, Sept. 12, 2003, a Tokyo store named Gurakubu Tokiwa, 122,000 Yen (black), Panasonic AY-DVM60EJ tapes, two 256MB Sandisk SD cards, extra 2040mAh battery.

The store was selected on the basis of price and accessibility from my brother's place in Tokyo. He said it took him 3.5 hours to buy the camera and get it shipped off via the Japanese post office's EMS service. It arrived in a couple of days, with some minimal customs and postage fees. (About $30, although I don't have the exact numbers right now.) I sent brother Jim a CD box of Tom Lehrer... we'll see if anyone on this forum remembers him!

Note that I purchased the SD cards from Adorama, the tapes from apeStockOnline.com, and the battery from BatterySavings.com. Next to be acquired will be a wide-angle converter lens and filters.

Greetings All,

I got my camera (the black one) about 9/15, from pricejapan.

It was originally ordered with the Pana waist battery pack and filter kit. I've since added a 256 Meg SD card (apparently a generic - It came with the Sager notebook I purchased around the same time).

Tapes are Fuji, since I trust their tape process pretty well (I have to with 800+ DLT tapes at work). :)

As a 'casual' user, I don't see getting much else besides tapes at this point.

I just got my GS100K this week.

John Palmieri == 26 January 2004 == Price Japan(Black) US$1202

I think the remarkable thing about this was that it arrived from Japan to Connecticut in less than 3 days. I ordered it on Friday at 3PM EST. It arrived Monday at 11AM EST.

The camacorder was brand new factory sealed with excellent service.

I got it in Nagasaki at Kitamura camera for 119,000 yen which is about $1120. Got it there as the staff at this shop has been great to me over the years and it comes with a 5 yr. warranty! It's been 8 yrs. since my hi8 died and haven't touched a video camera since. I got this model after all the rave comments from you guys. Didn't even check any footage out in the stores- going on the overwelming popularity of this cam that users here and at camcorderinfo.com have shown. Just for kicks I went to Yamada denki and asked the jokers there which camera had the best video quality. The salesman lead me to the Victor 3500 which was quite a bit cheper. He had some night footage of a local festival that looked great in the viewfinder but it wan't enough to deter me from the gs 100. Can't wait to try this puppy out later this weekend.

Hi Samuel and other members,

Here is a list of the GS100K and accessories I ordered from Price Japan in early January. Even with special order accessories I had everything in about a week.

I ordered the GS100K after reading all the messages on the DVi Community. We needed the Frame mode this Camcorder offers. The GS100K is everything the members talk about and more.

NV-GS-100K (Black) JPY 117,700
VW-VBD7 Waist Battery JPY 16,200
VW-LF43W Filter Set JPY 2,600
VW-LDH3 Video Light 5,960
VW-LLS Halogen Bulb for VM-LDH3 JPY 1,500 x 2 3,000
VW-FLHDJ3 Video Flash JPY 8,500
VW-SJGS100 Rain Cover JPY 6,930
VW-VMH3 Dedicated Stereo Zoom Microphone JPY 1,700

Since I am in Canada it was easier to send JPY (Yen).

Service from Price Japan was great. They keep in touch through the entire order to delivery process.

I ordered extra Panasonic CGA-DU21 2040mAh Batteries from a contact in Hong Kong for US$50.00 each including Registered insured Air Mail. If anyone is looking for batteries from a reliable source with great prices, send me an email and I will put you in touch.

I am becomming adicted to the DVi Community forum. Thank you to everyone who contributes.

Best wishes to all,

Brian

Here is a fine example of the service provided by PriceJapan.

Our second Panasonic NV-GS100K arrived in my office before 11:00 this morning 20 February. I am totally impressed. I paid PriceJapan through PayPal at about 00:40 19 February 2004. This must be a record; about 34 hours from payment to receipt of goods. The package traveled half way around the World, cleared Canada Customs and was delivered by DHL in less than 34 hours.

The NV-GS100K was perfectly packaged wrapped in bubble wrap then placed in a very strong outer carton. We only opened the outer carton to record the Serial Number. This GS100K will be kept as received as a back up for our first GS100K.

It is a plesure to do business with the professional staff at PriceJapan.

did you have to pay any duty or gst/pst on you cam?

Hello Travis,

This information should assist all Canadians.

We are a registered importer and exporter. We ordered the GS100K for our business. The Canada Customs Entry was a Commercial Importation B-3 Entry. The GS100K is Duty Free. We had to pay GST; however we get it back as we are GST registered.

Individual entry's are different. The GS100K is duty free to individuals as well as businesses. You will be required to pay GST to Canada Customs. You may be required to pay Provincial Sales Tax and Brokerage fees. Canada Customs can advise if they will charge Provincial Sales Tax for your Province. DHL can advise you of their policy on Brokerage or you could clear the shipment your self. Canada Customs Officers are very helpfull and will help with the paperwork. DHL will call you when the package arrives and offer you the choice.

Here is the best procedure to follow importing a GS100K or any other Digital Camcorder into Canada.

You need to identify the item per Canada Customs Classification:

Description: Digital Color Video Camcorder
Make & Model: Panasonic Model NV-GS100K
Classification Code: H.S. Code: 8525.410.00.10

We provide our suppliers with a Canada Customs Invoice in Microsoft Excel format. All PriceJapan had to do was enter the date of Direct Shipment, their Commercial Invoice Number and the Gross Weight of the package. They then print the Canada Customs Invoice and attach four copies to the DHL Air Waybill.

If anyone would like the Canada Customs Invoice in Microsoft Excel format, just ask.

Should you have any other questions, please drop me an email to Brian.Kirkey@PoliceOrdnance.com

I got my GS100k this week from an ebay auction for $1200. My only disapointment is that it doesn't let you see 16:9 correctly in lcd like the PDX10. Other than that I'm stoked!

My only disapointment is that it doesn't let you see 16:9 correctly in lcd like the PDX10.

But just think of that $1000 you saved and it makes it all worth while.

Wow, I haven't seen a GS100 on eBay yet!

Wow, I haven't seen a GS100 on eBay yet!Funny that you should mention that. For the last week I've been checking e-bay for lenses, and got curious to see if there were any GS100's and MX300's being flogged. :-))

Yeah, I could spend under $200 on a 16:9 7" lcd and then still have $800 left over for all kinds of accessories from the money I saved by not buying the pdx10. The same week I decided to order from price Japan, a silver one NIB popped up on ebay. I was in heaven! You guys have helped a Sony person see the light on this great camera over the last several months of my lurking. I hope to repay the debt I owe you all with my experiences with this awesome cam!

Wondered where you were, Samuel. Glad it wasn't your gs100k that got sold on eBay! Have you purchased any new accessories for your cam?

Samuel Raj

Pat, I was lil busy with my work, so I didnt have much time to work with cam. Apart from upgrading to windows XP and new dvd writer for my cam, I didnt buy any other accessories.
I was also busy taping my little newborn son with my precious gs100, recorded his FIRST voice after he came out to see the earth and his Dad! lol.

Whats up with you pat. Hope you also would be busy exploring your cam and taking shots of your family.

I just ordered a black gs 100 from pricejapan.
They sent me a link for the english translation of the user manual: http://404.realmud.com/mike/misc/nv_gs100k_eng/css/nv_gs100k.htm.

I tried to read the text with ms explorer and safari but i only get jibberish. Anybody have any other link that works.
Many thanks.

Pricejapan indicated that only two more black gs 100 available ... so I inquired about a replacement model. This is the answer:
"New model will be released on June, this year (roughly in 100 days)
We don't know any information about it.
Kaneda"
Thought this might be of interest.
