I have a client who wants to stream an event from one location to another.

There won't be any other viewers other than this one site, so I don't think I need a dedicated streaming server and HUGE bandwidth.

I'd like it to work from my camera's firewire feed, but basically, I guess i'm looking for webcam software, with a bit more resiliance and configurability.

Any suggestions?

thanks!

Windows Streaming Server is free and as long as there are no firewalls blocking you. You can setup and stream to the other computer with just a laptop and a firewire connection. Need to have a decent connection as well for uploading.

That sounds great, although I looked at the link you gave to windows media encoder, and I think I got a bit confused - windows streaming server seems to be a component of windows server, which is certainly not free! :-)

Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks for your help!

If you have access to a Mac, QuickTime Broadcaster lets you stream live, and it was free last time I tried it. I've also done quick-and-dirty streams with iChat for users who aren't good at setting things up on their end, but that's really for one user and not a crowd at one location.

Windows Media Encoder has a built in server. So if you get it you can just do a broadcast from the laptop or if you had a server push it to there.
