Does anyone out there have advice for getting cheap HDV video editing software? I need it to capture HDV at 24F (Canon user). I'm used to using a local University's software (Final Cut), but I am trying to become completely independent from using other's equipment, and I don't have a lot of money. The software doesn't have to do sfx or anything fancy, just basic transitions in a regular timeline. If anyone has suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks,

Premiere Elements 4 does the job.

a while ago B&H was selling Vegas 6 for $99. It comes with the Cineform Codec so you won't have issues grading and stuff. Although not sure if it works with 24f Canon.

This gets you into the Vegas world.

Since you are already comfortable with Final Cut Pro, why don't you look at Final Cut Express, its much cheaper than pro but does much of what pro does.

I have been using Sony Vegas since 2001. I am now in their latest suite version pro 8 and it works nice on a nice machine with HD and HDV

Since you are already comfortable with Final Cut Pro, why don't you look at Final Cut Express, its much cheaper than pro but does much of what pro does.Tim since you have an XH-A1 - Final Cut Express does not support 24F/24P. You'll have to convert it to get it to work in FCE.

B&H is great. They are fine to do business with.

However, I would ask you what you have in mind to do with your content. You mention editing 24 frame mode from the A1, and the package from B&H doesn't have any DVD authoring software, so you'll need something else to output your production.

I don't know if Vegas does or not handle the pull down the HDV stream from the A1 or not either. Premiere CS3 is kind of hickey on that, too. I have, among other, somewhat more professional cameras, an HF100 Canon, with which I use this technique: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/hdv2-canon-vixia-hv30-hv20-hv10/136175-tmpgenc-4-0-xpresss-24p-hv20-best-settings.html that I think will also will remove the pull down from the A1's steam as well.

If someone would post 3 to 5 seconds of A1 HDV content, I would certainly try it to see if it works.

The point is that it would be somewhat better to take your content that has been modified as 24P to the timeline rather than use the stream as shot, http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/hdv2-canon-vixia-hv30-hv20-hv10/136175-tmpgenc-4-0-xpresss-24p-hv20-best-settings.html assuming you want a 24P stream.

Of course, I might not understand your requirement, so feel free to ignore.
