I was working at CBS in '91 when they were considering using a very early version of a self propelled cable cam for the 1992 Winter Olympics. This version was manned and was able to propel itself back up the hill to catch the next skier.

Originally, the drive was hydraulic with power coming from a lightweight aircraft engine. Later versions used more of a cable car approach with the cable moving and the cam device able to move in either direction along the cable. I think I have pictures..... somewhere!

ya i would think that if u spun the cable it would cause alot more friction and movement in the cable and then obviously the camera.
