I searched but couldn't find an answer here on the forums. Someone sent me a link to an auction on Ebay for a 5ft cable that had a firewire plug on one end and USB plug on the other... is this for real? The seller has 40,000+ feedbacks (of which 99.8% are positive). I didn't know Firewire and USB were interchangable. Can someone clear this up for me or is this something common? The price was $4.00 - Yes 4 US DOLLARS. I can post link if that is allowed.

That sound you can no doubt hear is the entire membership of DVinfo ROFL hysterically.

Need I say more?

That is definitely a scam. USB and Firewire are in no way similar, except for maybe that they plug into computers.

Hang on - the seller didn't specifically say it would do anything did he?

maybe it's a piece of art - or maybe there's a market out there for these sorts of hybrid things:

240v Ac to XLR adaptor cable (will only work once)

ps2 to BNC adaptor

I think I'm on to something here....

Ha ha. Nothing phantom about that power!
I can think of a few vocalists I would like to give that mic to.

That seller is counting on the truth of the idea that PT Barnum was right. USB and Firewire use completely different data coding - it's not just a matter of what pin connects to what. Stay far, far away.

Just so people don't think I am blowing hot air... check this link. I can't believe these folks have such a high rating on ebay with so many positive feedbacks if they are selling bogus stuff like that.

USB 2.0 to Firewire 1394 4 PIN DV CABLE 5 FT Sony Canon - eBay (item 200281103731 end time Dec-03-08 18:47:21 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-to-Firewire-1394-4-PIN-DV-CABLE-5-FT-Sony-Canon_W0QQitemZ200281103731QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera_Cables_Cords?hash=item200281103731&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318)

I looked at that auction and scratched my head and thought I was missing something. I guess sorta like the time I thought I was wrong... but I wasn't.

They alledge there's a chip in the cable that translates the signals. I'll believe it when I see it in action. Their item "description" is just a long winded generic description of IEEE1394 and says nothing about their product, what it does, or how it works.
