Anyone using a 416 with the DVX100 providing the phantom power? I have been renting a 416, but the rental house provides a separate phantom power box that also includes a high pass filter. I briefly tried plugging the 416 directly into the camera and turned on the camera's phantom power, but did not seem to get any sound from the mic.

I am thinking about buying a 416, but having to deal with the extra power box is a big headache.

Are you sure the rental house isn't giving you a "T" power 416 rather then a phantom power required 416? All 416's require power, but there are 2 varieties...

You probably already knew this, so take no offense if this sounds like a stupid question...

I wasn't aware of a "T" powered variety. I didn't see anything about that on the Sennheiser web site. Is that an older model 416? Is the "T" power supplied via a standard XLR cable to the mic?

I'm sorry I can't explain the exact differences... everything I've used is Phantom Power (48v)... "T" power is 12v... also the two are NOT compatible so if you got a T-power 416 it would NOT work being fed from the dvx's phantom feed.

Many, many rental houses rent the "T" 416 rather then the phantom or "p48" version.

Other then the information I've given here, I know nothing. And you can quote me on that.

Basically if you want to know the differences you'll need to educate yourself somehow or go to dv.com and ask Jay Rose in the audio forums... He WILL know instantly.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that's been the whole problem though.

You definitely can power a P48 MKH416 directly from the DVX100.

You might as well buy a P48 version if you are buying new, but T versions are often cheaper second hand. You can buy a cylindrical T power to Phantom power adaptor that plugs onto the microphone and converts it ot Phantom power.
