Hi,
I have a dv tape that will not capture into FCP because there are major problems with the source tape.
I tried dubbing the tape to another mini dv, thinking that it was a dropped time code issue.
However, upon doing this, I realized that the second tape was even worse than the master.
There are huge chunks of audio missing from the tape.

I know I will not be able to use most of the audio on this tape, but I CAN use the image. Is there any way I can capture the image seamlessly in capture now without the audio so that I can ADR the sound later?

Do you know anyone with an OLD version of FCP, like 1.2.5 or 2? The early versions were VERY non-discriminatory and would just capture whatever you fed it, regardless of how many problems it may cause down the road. Drop outs? No problem, just don't expect the audio to line up.

Unfortunately, it's really hard to find people who have the old version of any program these days because of constant updates.

In log and capture, click on clip settings, deselect the audio option to enable video only recording. If the timecode is badly broken you may be able to capture disconnected pieces by setting in and out points and using the "log clip" function. I'd also try the Non-Controllable Device preset. Timecode should be ignored using this preset.

Piero's suggestion is on the mark: Use "Capture Now" with a non-controllable device preset. Then Final Cut will capture whatever you feed it regardless if there's audio, timecode or not.

If all else fails, you could always try analog- going S-Video out into another camcorder.

Try capturing in iMovie (more forgiving), then exporting to FCP.
