I have been using vegas, but switched to mac and am learning FCP2. In Vegas, when I would use the capture utility there, I would connect up my camera (a Pana GS320 in this case), choose capture tape, and it would make separate clips for every clip on the tape.

In FCP, it is making one long clip for the entire tape. Also, in Vegas, it would give me info on every clip tht had the record date, start and stop time, etc. The other oddity is that I have to push play on the deck, and it is not started by FCP when I press "Capture Now". It just sits there with a message "waiting for time code".

Any ideas for me? I have begun looking deeper into it, but am getting nowhere fast.

Better than Capture Now is Log and Capture, but thats neither here nor there.
What you want is to select the clip in the Browser, then go to Mark > DV Start/Stop Detect. This will put markers at each new clip.

DV Start/Stop detect doesn't work on HDV.

If you're capturing HDV, go to FCP User Prefs: on TC Break: Make new clip.

(And I agree; use Log and Capture - not Capture Now - if you ever might need to recapture the tapes in future.)

OK, I've got that all sorted. What I am doing is capturing a couple dozen home video tapes of family stuff and finally getting around to putting them on DVD for more easy viewing. I know in Vegas, you could easily view the date and time each clip was recorded on tape, which must be on the tape as meta data. That information was captured during log and capture and you could easily sort clips by date recorded.

I can not find anything like that in FCP. I did the DV Start/Stop Detect to break the clips up, but now I would like to see the record dates because my tape labeling was really lacking after a while and I could save my self a lot of time and brainpower trying to sort that out.

I'd hate to do this work on my old PC and Vegas and would like to do it all within FCP.

Anyone know how to get at that sort of clip information?
