I am looking to get a tripod in the $200-300 range. I have narrowed it down to two Bogen tripods. The first is a Bogen with 3011BN legs and a 3433 (501) Pro Video Head (Quick Release) for $242.00 (w/ a max. height of 58.2" without extended column) [found here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?BI=155&O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=221742&is=REG&si=spec#goto_itemInfo]. The second is a Bogen with 475 legs with geared column and a 3029 3-way Pan/Tilt Head for $268.00 (w/ a max. height of 68.8" without extended column) [found here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?BI=155&O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=253172&is=REG&si=spec#goto_itemInfo]. Which of the two heads is better? Which legs are better? I'm more worried about getting a better head than better legs. Thanks for any help.

Darrell,
There is a tremendous amount of information on tripods and heads in this section, particularly on Bogen/Manfrotto products such as the 501 head. Read, read, read!

In general, though, pass on the geared center column and go for the ball head. Much more versatile, easier to level. The second choice you showed is actually designed for still cameras, not video cameras.
