Basically I'm trying to understand the limitations of the DVX before I make up my mind to put it up for auction.

What's the best quality picture i can expect to get from the camera? I mean imitating filmic look with the 24 fps is one thing but I'm guessing it won't look like any thing shot on 35 mm even from the 80's.

Is that a fair assumption?

That's a very subjective question. The DVX100 is a standard definition 24p DV camera. Does it look like film- sure, certainly much more so than a 60i camera. But film is not just frame rate. It's also depth of field or rather lack of depth of field- shallow focus. For that you'd need to get a DVX100 *and* a 35mm lens adapter. Then you'll have the most filmic look that camera can produce(assuming lit well, acted well, written well, good production design, composition, makeup, etc.) As with any piece of gear, you don't just turn it on and get gold.

That said, there are also many other cameras out there with 24p and high-definition and the ability to mount cinema lenses. The DVX100 is definitely the entry level camera on the way up to HVX200/EX1 and then Panavision Genesis, RED, etc.

Thanks Noah. I've been reading: 24p: the AG-DVX100 and digital filmmaking (http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/index.html#The_chroma-patterning_problem) and a couple of other sites to see if I have any are giving me encouraging news.

when you say 35mm lens adapter, would anyone do? or do you have a specific one in mind?

Brevis, Letus, RedRock Micro and the P+S Technic are all good ideas. I have a disc that gives the whole lowdown on what lens adapters do and how to set them up:

Lens Adapter Guidebook - Camera - Instructional DVDs (http://www.callboxlive.com/instructional-dvds/cameras/lens-adapter-guidebook.html)
