Can anyone shed any light on how to convert PAL DVD-R Video to NTSC DVD Video?

I'm familiar with authoring DVDs and am aware of the different framerates and regions between PAL and NTSC.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Many thanks and regards

Has anyone seen SPY_N: China Strike Force? How in the world did they film the fight scene on the suspended pane of glass? If that's green screen, it's the best I've ever seen. And if it wasn't, those actors were nuts.

For those interested in viewing current images of Saturn and some of its moons, NASA's "Cassini-Huygens" spacecraft will arrive at Saturn's moon, Phoebe, on June 11th and will go into orbit around the planet Saturn on July 1st.

The main web site is: http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/index.cfm .

This is a biggie, especially the encounter with Saturn's moon, Titan. The space probe, "Huygens", will be parachuted through Titan's atmosphere. I believe this probe was built by the European Space Agency and is a US/European cooperative effort.

The pictures on the web site are really amazing and hint at what will follow as the Cassini spacecraft passes through the Rings of Saturn and then goes into orbit around the planet.

Nick (P.S., if this thread does not comply with The Totem Pole criteria, please move to Area 51 or where ever. Thanks.)

I got Voom!, but when they came to install it, the guy said my condo's front faces southeast, but I can't have a dish out there. He told me the back, which faces southwest, won't work, so he left.

Dish Network goes southwest, and I didn't have to pay for a special HD dish or anything, it came with the order for free. I went with them.

Direct TV goes southwest, but you have to pay $300 for the HD dish.

Keep that in mind when you go to order, so you're not sitting around for the installer, only to learn you can't get it! D'oh!

ps-Adelphia is dependent on if it's available. Last I checked, they only had NBC and CBS (local), which were broadcasting in HD in Palm Beach County, Florida.

We just watched this film. What a hoot! And whose name rolls past our faces in the credits? None other than our own Charles Papert as Steadicam Operator.

Charles, I cannot even imagine the experience of working on that film. How in the world did you manage to keep the camera...err, steady...while laughing?

But watching the "Anatomy of a Scene" (from the Sundance Channel) feature in the extras was a bit puzzling. Each cast and crew member was so serious about this romp. You'd think they were talking about working on Mystic River. Geez, kids, it was pure silly fancy!

I need a crash course in what it means to dub 1/2 and 3/4 reels and DVD's. I'm not completely in the dark on it. I have a general understanding but I would like to know what it means to reassure myself I know what I'm talking about. Can someone give me a detailed definition of Video dubbing and DVD dubbing. Thank You.

HI,

i am currently attending the film program in CSULB. I am applying to NYU and Columbia for their master program in production. I wonder if anyone who is attending or had attended either program could help introduce the schools from a student's point of view. I've read many reviews about these school from filmmakers.com, but somehow i need feedback that's more personal than that. Such as the student/student or student/teacher relation; the artistic direction; the life in NYU... so on and so on. I notice many people worry about the tuition, but very often people talk about how to get in or share their experiences of going through the process. Hope I can hear from many of you and some in depth views =)

thanks

Completely off topic, but it's been bothering me since i graduated. I thought you film pro's might have insight/empathy. Yeha so i majored in psychology in college, and took as many film classes as we had.

One of the classes I took was Cinematic Auteurs, Oliver Stone. The course itself was interesting, but my professor was complete crap. As he would lecture it came to my attention that he had a small grasp on what he was talking about, he would make comments about aspects of a movie that seemed totally irrelevant, and distracting from what was really happening within the film (not going to get into vocab of specifics i think you peeps know what i mean). So i did some research to find out what made this guy qualified to teach this course. I was appalled. He attended a summer film course, in which he made a 9 minute documentary, oh yeah and he had degree in english. Now don't get me wrong english is cool. I speak it, and occasionally write it. But i hardly think that this a qualifying resume to teach film at the college level. Oh and he was a prick on top of it, but that's neither here or there. Ok i'm done venting.

Can somebody tell me what cameras they use to film their content, NOT the little handycams the investigators use. I am talking about the off-camera cameras. I think I might have seen a bit of progressive/frame type motion but I am not sure.

Hey, I'm looking (kind of urgent) to the name of the song in the trailer of Man On The Moon. No,not the theatrical trailer with the song of REM playing, but the one that is on the dvd.

The trailer can be found here:

http://www.mymovies.net/player/player.asp?url=/film/fid79/trailers/trid80/wm/bb.asx&filmid=79&sec=trailers

It's the song at the beginning. I recognize it, they use it quite often for trailers, but I really can't find it.

Any feedback is appreciated!
Thanks

I recently put this together as a comprehensive website including interviews, pictures, and multimedia pertaining to director Alexander Payne and his films (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth). As a filmmaker myself, I find his films very inspiring.

I am in the process of adding more information, and there is a message board as well, so please check it out! Thank you very much for your support.

I couldn't think of a better subject line, sorry.

The Toronto police posted an image gallery online of photos taken in child pornography sessions and asked the net public to identify where the place was so that they could begin an investigation. They got hundreds of tips and two identified the same hotel and based upon this the hotel was identified.

Article here:
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/02/04/police-toronto050204.html

What I find interesting is that the gallery is still up here (http://www.cbc.ca/toronto/news/victim_gallery/FrameSet.htm) and you can view it. What is really creepy is that, understandably for reasons of privacy, they cloned out the images of the victims though not completely so that you can make out that some poor child (and possibly perpetrator) was in the center of the photograph but isn't now. I don't know how else to voice it. The victim has been 'erased'.

Still, very upsetting for those of you who are parents or who care for children.

Since there has been a lot of discussion lately on the subject of music licensing for video I found this article entertaining. It talks about TV shows that may never come to DVD because the music licensing would be too difficult or too expensive. Pretty funny I think. They would rather let the music drift into obscurity than risk not making a zillion dollar profit off of it.

We've had author Steve Alten (http://stevealten.com/) come to our school (www.palmbeachfilmschool.com) that I teach at, and he's cool and inspirational. He really got me more motivated to go out and get my next feature film (www.904am.com) made.

Well, he's got this new book about the Loch Ness Monster coming out, and I've gotta say, I'm pumped. For those of you familiar with Steve's work, he's famous for out-Jawsing Jaws with 3 books about 70 foot long prehistoric Great White Sharks (Megs) rampaging in modern-day California. He's also written some trippy, end-of-the-world books (Domain and Resurrection) and a deadly, super sub (Goliath) that were highly enjoyable.

For more, visit his Loch Ness site (http://www.thelochness.com/) to find out more. The book ships in May 2005! On his homepage (http://stevealten.com/), you can send him an email to sign up for his newsletter.

Also, the producers of The Thing (1982) and Hellboy are onboard the Meg adaptation, with Jan de Bont (Speed, Twister) directing. Steve's actually writing the script from his book! They're looking for a studio right now, with hopes to have this in theatres by 2006 or 2007.

As some of you may or may not know, I'm a BIG comic book nut! I have an Iron Man and Punisher tattoo on my arm and leg, respectively, so I love it! I co-run an Iron Man fansite/board, www.advancediron.org and www.invincibleironman.com/forums.

We're co-sponsoring a cool contest to help promote a new armored hero from Assassination Entertainment called Zoom Suit (www.superverse.com), which has art from Bob Layton and Bart Sears! There's even an animated 9 minute preview of the comic on the site!

Here's a link to the contest we're running with Assassination: http://www.invincibleironman.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1772

A jury in California just awarded Lexar $465 million in damages in their suit against Toshiba which claimed theft of trade secrets related to their NAND flash memory. This was the biggest intellectual property reward in California's history, and the amount is nearly twice Lexar's market cap of $251 million and exceeds Toshiba's entire annual net profit of $432 million. It also caused Lexar's stock price to instantly double!

Should have some interesting fallout; Sandisk jointly owns a flash memory factory with Toshiba. The iPod shuffle uses Toshiba flash memory.

Hello to all denizens of NYC out there. I'm coming up to the city early this Friday morning (April 1st) for the weekend for a workshop I have on Sat/Sun, but I'll be poking around the city by myself for most of the day Friday. If anyone wants to meet up and yap about filmmaking in the big apple, or just wander around, maybe stop at B&H, etc., let me know here or drop me an email.

Also, if you just happen to know of something going on this weekend that I should check out, let me know that too!

Thanks!

Hi Everyone -

I havn't been around in awhile. Been really busy with my site. Some of you may already know it, but if you don't check it out: Check it out if you like. http://www.moviemarkdvd.com

Coming Soon:
http://underground.moviemarkdvd.com
http://filmmakers.moviemarkdvd.com

2 cool sites in development so there's not much to see yet. The filmmaker site is up but is still in development

the underground site will be strictly for indie DVDs that do not have any kind of official distribution deal anywhere. i've been talking to several filmmakes whose DVDs will be added when this site goes live in April

the filmmakers site will be where filmmakers can find out how their films can be sold on my site, plus pricing for services such as DVD authoring, duplication and replication. The rest of the site will be filled with how to's and articals all about getting a movie onto DVD and how to self distribute. There will be a forum over there to discuss distribution, DVD authoring and other related subjects involved with getting a final cut to the public.

that being said - - -
I am looking for artical submissions about anything dealing with authoring or distribution that I can reprint on my site.

I'm also looking for resource links. Links to places to sell your DVDs, festivals, lawyers, authoring articles or how to's, marketing stuff and anything else relevant to distribution.

I want to make this a very comprehensive resource for filmmakers.

How Many Formats Can Your DVD Player Play?
Pioneer Player Works With DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD, WMA, .mp3, DVD-R, DVD-RW, .JPG, DivX

Las Vegas, NV January 5, 2005 At times it seems like the movie studios and recording industry release a new type of format or disc every week. With so many acronyms on the market – DVD, SACD, DivX®, etc. – it’s tough to figure out which formats or discs work with which player. While no DVD player can guarantee its ability to playback every format available, Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. is working to simplify the situation with the introduction of a DVD player that plays many of these new formats and discs. Pioneer’s new DV-588A-S is a full-featured, single-play DVD player that brings high-resolution music and movies into thousands of homes with playback of DVD-Video with PureCinema™ progressive scan, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs for home recordings, DVD-Audio and SACD for multi-channel music, DivX for viewing Internet video material, .mp3 and WMA for compressed music, and .jpg for photo viewing.

For the value-oriented consumer, Pioneer is also introducing the DV-285-S, an entry-level workhorse offering the best in performance with playback of DVD-Video with PureCinema progressive scan, at a price that can’t be overlooked. It also offers playback of .mp3 and WMA compressed music formats and has a PhotoViewer for digital images.

“These new DVD players offer performance features at a great value to consumers,” said Gary Bauhard, director of marketing for home entertainment of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “In today’s digital world, players need to be flexible enough to playback a majority of digital audio and video formats especially compressed audio content.”

Both DVD players offer outstanding image quality with Pioneer’s PureCinema progressive scan circuitry and 108 MHz/12 bit video signal processing. They also process both Dolby™ Digital and DTS™ for a complete surround sound experience from DVD. They offer component and S-video outputs.

The DV-588A-S and DV-285-S will be available in April at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $199 and $99 respectively.

Interesting article on BusinessWeek about Sony.

http://yahoo.businessweek.com/investor/content/apr2005/pi20050413_5837_pi044.htmwe believe the market expects Stringer to conduct a major overhaul of Sony's current business portfolio

...................................

We think Wall Street perceives it as a two-sided issue: Stringer will keep the hardware business or the software business, but not both. At S&P, the betting is that he'll likely keep the software unit and spin off the hardware unit one way or another.
