To convert a PAL digital master mini DV tape to NTSC digital master mini DV. How? I.E. What format is the footage stored at on my hard drive (AVI?) and how can I convert the PAL recorded footage out to NTSC? I am using Premier 6.5. Help me please.

If it's a master for duplication or broadcast it's best to get a production house to do the conversion. NLE apps are the worst of the bunch for format conversion. Quicktime Pro is a step better but only really good for personal use, DVFilm Alatantis (http://www.dvfilm.com/atlantis/) and Focus Enhancements', the makers of the Firestore, DV conversion suite (http://www.focusinfo.com/products/firestore/dvconversionsuite/dvcsuite.html) would be the next step up and cheaper than a pro conversion.

In the end it's going to come down your budget as pro conversion can be very expensive plus you'd have to go to ChCh to have it done.

Basically you can just export your footage from Premiere by
using the NTSC profile instead of the PAL. Whether or not this
will look good (enough) depends on the quality of algorithms
Permiere is using and what you find acceptable. Usually is
easier (quality wise) to go from PAL to NTSC then the other
way around.

Using Premiere to convert your master will result in less than acceptable quality and unsynced audio. To convert both you will have to use an app that handles the audio as well. This is something that Premiere will not do.

Thanks for all the help. Sounds like it's best to send it off to Chch indeed. Not worth buying anymore software for a one off task.
Cheers.

I have the same problem <<<To convert a PAL digital master mini DV tape to NTSC digital master mini DV>>>

Is it possible to play the PAL tapes on my Sony DSR-11 deck firewired direct to my XL1s and record onto a new mini-dv?

I may be missing some fundamental concepts here but I am going to give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for sharing any knowledge,

Bill

Hi,

I use Canopus's ProCoder for converting files and it works great.

I've been told that the PAL-NTSC, NTSC-PAL is awesome, but I can't *personally* vouch for it.
