I want to create english subtitles for a video that I will be putting up on the web and buring to a DVD. I will be using DVDSP2 for the DVD creation and I have done a few test renders that have turned out ok with Cleaner 6 so i will probably use that for the web version.

Any recomendations for what (free) software to use that both apps will import from. I tried a program called TitleLab but it kept on crashing on me and it didn't wan't to open the saved Quicktime text files.

Or should I create the subtitles in DVDSP2 and some how export them for the web encode, if so how?

Subtitles for a DVD are normally done via the DVD authoring program, that way you can turn them off and on as you wish. However for creating QT files or any other video files you have to embed them into the video stream, so you would need a title program in order to overlay the titles - most editing applications allow you to do this.

Now you could create your sub titles for your DVD, Play the DVD (with sub titles) from a set top DVD player and recod from the DVD player to your computer via s-video or composite. That way you will not have to go through the process of creating sub titles twice.
