Is anyone else having trouble opening the ".sitx" file that is downloaded when you try to upgrade your Windows Media player to version 9? Stuffit says it doesn't recognize the ".sitx" extension. I tried simply removing the "x" but then it says it's corrupted.

You gotta love Windows....

You need to use version 8 of Stuffit. Version 7 gives the error.

Thanks, Jeff. I have Stuffit Deluxe, and this "x" extension has forced me to upgrade. Boy, that burns me how they "force" upgrades like this...my version 7 was working fine.

One version of 8 is free, the other is a charge to upgrade.

That's just it, Jeff. I own the full Stuffit Deluxe version. If I upgrade using the free version....

...see what I mean?

What mad tight hardcore advantages does Stuffit 8 have over the previous versions? How does it make the world a better place? Does it make the compressed files even smaller? Is it as good as WinRAR?

You can use both, and have 7 the default program for most files. Then set the free version of 8 as the default for the files 7 won't open.

When a company is making changes like this to obviously require upgrades, then as much as I hate letting them lead me by the nose hairs, I've found it's better to swallow the bitter pill and do it. Otherwise, you find other functionality being whittled away, piece by piece.

What I'm saying is, changes such as this are simply sales gimmicks it seems. I have no problem upgrading when I'm getting more bang for my buck...but when the upgrade simply allows you little or no extra benefit other than doing what it did before, and negating the functionality of previous versions in the process...well, there's a name for that...
